The Wayfarer's Ledger · CITY
Chapter 195
Vel-Sathra
also called The Rootwater City, Last Sounding
The Hessk core city in the Underworld, built where a black subterranean river crosses a forest of stone roots; a fully visitable refuge, caravan station, and guardian of the oldest road below.
Vel-Sathra is the other Hessk heart: older in habit than Sresh-Dar and far below any ocean, where the Rootwater runs through caverns whose columns resemble the roots of a buried forest. Hessk ancestors lived in these waters eons ago, before later families followed the drowned valleys outward to the sea. The city alternates black-water canals with dry basalt terraces so outsiders can live beside Hessk neighbors. Buildings are fitted between natural pillars instead of replacing them, faced in warm shell-lime and rose mineral wash, with bronze mirror wells carrying borrowed daylight from shafts far above. The city is run by the Depth Moot. Every inhabited terrace, working guild, shrine household, and recognized foreign quarter sends a Speaker; they choose a First Sounding for a twelve-year measure, favoring the candidate who has kept water, food, and roads open through a real civic crisis. Speakers may be of any race. The current First Sounding is Maresha Rootkeeper, a Hessk engineer-priest. Faith centers on the Lady of the Long Water as the keeper of roads water makes through stone, alongside tolerated Stoneborn ancestor niches and Reshi road shrines. Locals speak in exact spatial metaphors—above, below, before the bend—and introduce themselves by neighborhood and work before ancestry.
